Call for Entries: "Women and Words"

A juried show at art6 Gallery for the month of April as part of MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts 2010. Curated by Shann Palmer.

Women artists and writers are encouraged to submit (in collaboration or individually) for this exhibit. Works must include text as part of the work. All media will be considered, though two-dimensional work will be favored for this particular show as we have limited areas for pedestals.

Size should be under 4 by 4 feet, please inquire before bringing or mailing anything larger. If a work is mailed, please include return postage if it is not selected or does not sell. Up to two pieces per artist will be considered.

The entry fee is as follows: $10.00 per piece for Art6 gallery members, $15.00 per piece for non-members. (Collaborators may send an additional piece each or another collaboration with a fee).

There is room for a few works by men about women (or women's words), but this is primarily an exhibit for women. All rules apply to men as written below.

We encourage you to price your work to sell, you will receive 70% of the selling fee, the gallery 30%. You may donate part or all of the proceeds to the gallery if you would like to help our gallery stay open, but this will not impact whether or not your piece is accepted.

We will accept work March 20th and March 27th during our Saturday hours 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Please call to make an appointment on other days- DO NOT COME TO THE GALLERY WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT ON OTHER DAYS. art 6 WILL be open on First Fridays in the coming months.

The state has already cut grants, now they want to eliminate the agency that helps most of us survive.

Particularly those on the Broad Street First Friday walk.

The city has been offering a hand of support on one side and on the other demanding the galleries large and small comply with ridiculous costly regulations and given the galleries less than twenty days to do so, threatening to close us down by the October openings.

This is not a good thing for the city. First Friday provides a fun night for families from all over the region, offers artists a place to exhibit and occasionally sell their work. We have an email list that includes names from DC, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, and even Glen Allen!!!

We don't know where this resistance is coming from but we suspect there is a concern that the galleries somehow compete negatively with Centerstage, but it may also be possible that people who come down for First Friday will be MORE likely to come to events there because they are accustomed to the welcoming, exciting atmosphere they have experieced on First Friday.

The McShin Foundation for recovering addicts is holding their annual "Recovery Fest" Barbeque Cook-Off tomorrow between noon and 5:00pm. Purchase tasting tickets at the door for $20.00. National Art of Recovery Show 2009

Opening Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 27, 2009

In celebration of National Recovery Month, The Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance of Virginia (SAARA) presents its first National Art of Recovery Show at art6 gallery. Juried by Belle Pendleton, professor of art history at Christopher Newport University, the main downstairs gallery is devoted to the art of recovery, with art by prisoners located in the smaller gallery. The McShin Foundation, a partner and member of SAARA, provides art supplies to prisoners. Sales of inmate artwork will be donated to help fund their art.

This exhibition features paintings, photography, mixed media, sculpture and furniture by international and local artists E-yage, Keith Ramsey, Earle Taylor, Stanley Rayfield, Devon Lawrence, Vreni Michelini, William Miles, Kyle Epps, Julian Green, Devin Fallen, Bolaji Oyrgunie, Helen Butler, Joe Williams, Gene Toutsi, Janine Turner and David Turner.

Artist's statement:
The Akan proverb states "Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a, yenkyi." The term Sankofa comes from the words "san" (return), "ko" (go), and "fa" (look, seek, and take.) The image of the mythological bird with its head bent looking backward has been interpreted and re-interpreted in several different ways. At times, it can symbolize the chief who can see all, even things behind him. It has also been used as a symbol for the Akan idea that the past can help to guide the future or the thought that, if a mistake has been made or something is forgotten, the wrong can be righted and that one can learn from experience.

In this powerful collection of over one hundred images and testimonies, award-winning photographer Thomas Daniel has documented the world of Civil War reenactors—men, women and children who recreate and relive one of the most turbulent and tragic periods in American history. These images capture the reenactors’ genuine passion to educate, to celebrate and honor the past, and in some cases, to trace their own ancestry. They capture the fanatical devotion of some to the Southern cause, and what it means to be a son or daughter of the South. Their stories also allow us to more fully understand the complexities of this remarkable group and its often misunderstood and controversial flag.
This is a journey to a world few of us know, where the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, and Harpers Ferry still live, where Confederate and Union soldiers skirmish, and reenactors labor to duplicate historical truth down to the smallest recorded detail. Their dedication to honest and genuine portrayal is clearly evident in these photographs, in their stories, and in their willingness to bear the discomforts of cold, rain, and mud to live the truth of those who died on the battlefields.

Over recent years, Daniel has traveled the South to interview and photograph this society of reenactors—Northerners, Southerners, Native Americans, and African Americans who share their own individual motives for creating this living history. As Daniel himself writes in the introduction, this book is not to recreate the battles, the reasons for the war, or to argue who won or lost, but to capture all the myriad reasons why men and women dress and live the part of confederate and union soldiers. Their reasons are as candid and diverse as the men and women who live the life of reenactors. The photographs that follow, however, are the most memorable. They alone tell revealing, unforgettable stories.

About the Artist

Thomas A. Daniel, born in 1948 in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a son of the South. A veteran of the Viet Nam War, he began his photographic career in South Viet Nam. He went on to receive his BFA in communications, art and design from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), his MA in photography from Goddard College, and his MFA in photo/film from VCU. He later returned to VCU as a Distinguished Visiting Artist in Photography.
Mr. Daniel’s first photographs were of war and are in the permanent collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and in the publication of war photographs titled, The Indelible Image; Photographs of war-1846 to the Present. Two monographs, titled Thomas Daniel and Into My Eyes, present Mr. Daniel’s extensive black-and-white documentary. Other permanent collections include the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond, Virginia) and the William Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut (Storrs, Connecticut). VCU’s Anderson Gallery holds the largest collection of his work. A four-time winner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, Mr. Daniel’s work has been shown in over 200 exhibits throughout the United States and abroad. One of his favorite exhibits, Anderson Gallery’s show, The Bad Boys of Photography, puts Mr. Daniel in the company of photography greats Danny Lyon, Bruce Davidson, Manuel Alverez Bravo, and Aaron Siskind.
Considered an “underground legend,” Mr. Daniel’s photographs are both a compassionate and unflinching look at society’s fringe cultures from the enobling and beautiful to abject and tragic. In Remarkable Modernisms, John Yau, poet and art critic, states that Daniel’s work “uses the camera to explore his own tenderness…not to delineate separation.” He is labeled a “New Critical piety” in Yau’s essays.

This exhibition will feature art reflecting on recovery from addictions and will demonstrate the amazing power of the creative spirit to foster freedom from addiction. Open to all Virginia artists, professional and nonprofessional, in recovery or not. Reception and presentation tonight.

I read this by Bruce Miller and wanted to highlight it: (scroll to Sept. 1st on his blog to read the full entry)

We who work in or care about the nonprofit arts sector need to make sure that we also get in the game. We need to remember that Labor Day not only marks the closing of our neighborhood pools, plus the beginning of the Virginia public school year and the NFL and NCAA football seasons. Labor Day is our chance to remind all Virginians that the nonprofit arts sector and its 18,851 jobs represent an irreplaceable force in the state economy. The arts are not a frill or a nicety. We are a cornerstone industry, crucial to the Commonwealth and its financial well-being.

We don't have any employees at art6, our workforce consists of thirty-plus members, volunteers, and interns. Every month we mount two to three exhibits, attend many committee meetings, apply for grants, send out publicity, paint and patch walls, and much, much more.

Some of us are lucky- we have employment in the arts and teaching the arts, but most of us have regular 'day jobs' in the public sector. Our efforts in the gallery take up our spare time, our extra time, time we take away from making our own art - but it's a labor of love.

Support our efforts- donate to art6. Support the arts in Virginia, in Richmond.

Margaret Porter-Daniel: Paper Dolls First Friday opening in the small gallery 6-10pm

Sept. 5 through Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 Margaret Porter-Daniel combines engraving, silkscreen, litho crayon, wallpaper, and other materials to present a new perspective on the the Battle of Gettysburg.

This is an exquisite exhibit drawn from the era of the Civil War, executed with the considerable skill Porter-Daniel brings to the project. Using the medium of paper dolls, she takes history and brings a playful aspect to a very serious time.

In addition, the work is interactive! Look for the opportunity to dress a doll yourself, with her wonderful outfits.

You don't have to be a star to be in our show, but if you've got the stuff, we're ready to support your efforts, but please, prima donnas, there are plenty of other places for you to strut while you're waiting for new york to call- we want people who aren't too high on themselves to paint a podium, to take out a bag of trash, to do the hard work some boring committee requires.

We know, you're too busy to sit or to come to meetings- whatever- we're busy too, but the committed members of art6 believe in something bigger than art on the walls- bigger than First Friday- bigger than Broad Street-

SWELL takes you on a ride through many different perspectives about dance and performance, ranging from post-modern abstract dance to physical theater.

Kristin Dexnis explores childhood and its effects on the adult persona in Jessica Danser's solo work An Original Half Done Story. Corporate Realities, made in collaboration with Alie Vidich, explores a reality where the small man gets lost competing against big business. In And With my Eyes..., Dexnis presents her ideas surrounding rebirth in a solo inspired by the poem "Renascence" by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Vidich presents authentic evening, a new solo that explores the sensation of being vulnerable and the act of covering it up.

Serial Witness: The Sequential Prints of Mitzi Humphrey Opening Friday, March 7, 2008 at 6 p.m. On exhibit through March 30 VCU professor Barbara Tisserat has said of Mitzi Humphrey's art: "it is fascinating to note the persistent recurrence of certain formal strategies and thematic interests...one becomes aware of similarities that are sometimes masked by differences in style and format. Ideas and images appear, fade, and are resurrected in altered versions; new contexts providing fresh meanings. Demonstrating an evolving sophistication and complexity, refinements of intention and execution, the art reveals a mind engaged in the serious play of disciplined studio practice and a heart open to the suggestions of intuition and the adventure of life experience."

Ms. Lowry's show, entitled "Endurance," and composed of large oil paintings, will be in the main gallery, and Ms. William's show, entitled "Oils and Small Water Colors," will occupy the small gallery. The paintings that compose "Endurance" are large landscapes that focus on the theme of loss. The paintings were inspired by the austere northwest coastal regions of Scotland, which Ms. Lowry sketched during a visit to her ancestral land. In her artist's statement, she notes that 'the expansive views of earth, water and air depicted in these large-scale paintings serve as metaphors for the forces that bear down upon us as we journey through life." She states that her works acknowledge "the reality of our fear, grief and death, while paradoxically nurturing hope."

The paintings by Ms. Williams celebrate "the nature of color and gesture." A relatively new member of the Gallery, Ms. Williams says of her work:"Painting requires the distillation of experience through feeling and form. Using different media, I have become more and more involved with the mystical power of color, regardless of the scale of the painting, and with the ability of color to transcend the particular."
